15/08/09 –  Away to Hanney.

By Ean Challand.

We started the game again with only ten men – Toby once again arriving a few minutes after everyone else, but without the traffic as an excuse! It didn’t matter though, as Ryan and Duncan both bowled good opening spells and we had Hanney 3 down whilst keeping it nice and tight. Steve and Ollie took over and continued to keep it tight, but Hanney’s fifth wicket pair stuck around for quite a while – not scoring very quickly but forcing us into having to work hard for our wickets. Ollie eventually broke their resistance, bowling their number 3, and Ian bowled a decent spell taking over from Steve. Wickets then fell quite steadily and we did a very good job of keeping it tight – much like last week when they scored at less than 4 an over for the last 10. They finished up on 160 for 8.

Ben and Ryan opened the batting and got us off to a storming start, going at about 6 an over for the first 7 or 8 overs. We then had a mini-collapse, losing 4 quite quick wickets before the score reached 80. But Ollie and Toby batted sensibly, realising we needed less than three an over, and saw us comfortably through to a strong position before Ollie was bowled for 40. Toby then saw us through with the help of Steve Yates, and then Grant for us to win by 4 wickets – Toby finishing on a fine 30 not out.

Man of the Match was Ollie with his 2-50 and 40 runs, with an honourable mention for Toby for his 30*.

Champagne Moment was given to Toby for his first Six ever – celebrated so dramatically that even the umpire agreed it deserved the award! Other nomination was Ian bowling their number 6 round his legs.

Finally, Pig’s Ear went to Duncan for the worst drop at first slip in Wantage CC history, although an extremely honourable mention also goes to Ian for managing to bowl a three strip wide the very next ball!

Special mention must go to BEN PUTT and the bizarre and entertaining running on the field of his partner Gemma, this wouldnt happen at Lords. I dont know who looked more shocked Ben or the rest of the players..?!?

Overall A good win though, and we’re still only 5 points behind Stonesfield – let’s just keep winning!
