Dorchester (H) Cherwell 5C WL

Here we are again, welcome to the 2023 season, and with the introduction of our 2nd XI, twice the match report reading to be done! You’d think that’d mean I’d keep this brief, we’ll see… Abysmal weather over the last few weeks, including washing out 86 of 87 games across the Cherwell league meant that today’s visit of Dorchester was the 1’s first action of the season. Dorch, a team we’ve become pretty familiar with over the last few seasons, turned up with only 10 (which it subsequently turns out means they’ve been…continue reading →

Wootton and Boars Hill (A) – Cherwell League Div 5c (WLD)

With last week’s attempts to change our sequence of win at home, lose away, by only getting a winning draw, it was time to see if we could do any better than losing away… So off we plodded to the always wet Wootton and Boars Hill. Would it be dry this time? Would it heck, with reports of heavy rain on the A34 on the way over there spreading quickly. Luckily, just after the rain subsided the grounds team turned up and put the covers on. When they were taken off again however,…continue reading →

West Ilsley (H) – Cherwell League Div 6C

In runs Harvey, to bowl what would be the last ball of the game, he delivers, the batsman pushes forward, it’s edged and… more on that later. 7 hours earlier With the weather set fair and the strip looking newer than a test match pitch in Bristol we were all set to take on West Ilsley in what would be the first win-lose-draw game for Wantage CC. The straw coloured wicket, and the sun blaring, made us all think it was a no-brainer to bat first. Not something our skipper had to worry…continue reading →

Faringdon (H) – OCA Div 2

With the week’s controversial news that we had been reinstated to the Airey Cup after Faringdon were excluded for playing an ineligible player, it was only fate that we would face them on Saturday. All week the forecast had been bad for the day, so the covers were on overnight and back on at the start of the game. Barry “Two Pints” Martin went out for the toss, and lost, meaning we had the pleasure of batting first in the heavily overcast, drizzly conditions. As usual, opening up was Colin “Grumps” Mercer and…continue reading →
