WAGS v Oxenford 3rd August 2024 – Match report

With the skipper away in deepest Wales with no phone signal for the week preceding the match, VC Willbury stepped up to the plate and ended up with far more admin than necessary - team selection, changes of venue, parking restrictions and organising lift shares! For the man who is always late (even to his home Oxford matches) this was a tall ask, however all 11 arrived (some on time, some late, and much to everyone’s disbelief, Wilbury was 30 minutes early - and didn’t invite any of the team to his ‘team’…continue reading →

Horspath 4s (away) Cherwell 5C WLD

This weekends 1st team fixture saw an away trip to Horspath. Confidence was high after a strong performance last week and the knowledge that the previous game against this opposition saw a 203 run victory. Unfortunately, the 'Crucible' appearance of the track and return of additional squad members to the hosts, ensured that the Skipper was preaching caution and a determination to maintain our winning ways.  The Skipper's up and down day started by winning the toss and putting Horspath into bat. With the team talk echoing in our ears, the team started…continue reading →

1st XI vs Watlington 1 – 29/6/24 – Cherwell 5C- WLD

The rarity of a Saturday match report! So, let’s make it a good one. The 1’s returned to Charlton Road after a torrid 3 weeks. 3 successive heavy defeats, albeit to some of the leagues stronger opposition, had reigned in expectations after the jet-propelled start to the season. After the debacle at Risinghurst a week previous, the order of the day was a competitive, fighting performance, regardless of the end result.   With the wounds of last week’s batting collapse still fresh and his two seam bowling aces back in the pack, there…continue reading →

WAGCC 1st XI v Horspath 4s – Cherwell 5C WL – 11th May 2024

Welcome to the 2024 league season, and the 1s starting home fixture against Horspath 4s… New season, new captain, same toss result, Chitty losing his first official toss and we were put in to bat. Which I believe is what he was going to do anyway, it’s certainly what he should have been doing. Opening up was Colin, and the newly promoted to opener, Winston. A generally watchful start, Colin getting a couple of boundaries away off his pads, before Winston took a liking to the first change bowler. Unfortunately however, that liking…continue reading →

Wantage & Grove Rove to Chalgrove – Radley v Wantage I (A) – Cherwell Div 5C WL

Haiku Review Hope springs eternal We had it in our own hands But we lost again Full Review Arriving to Radley’s second ground in the curious village of Chalgrove, the team were buoyed by notions of glory. Perennial achievers of second place (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2021 and probably others), Wantage held their own destiny in their hands – namely, beat mid-table Radley and win the Division above our friends and rivals Dorchester, who were hosting bottom club Sunningwell. Concerns about the way the pitch had handled last season were raised, but on…continue reading →

Eynsham (home) – Cherwell 5C – WL

The final home game of the season was here already , and hasn’t the season flown ! It seems just the other day it was the first game of the season and we were all looking out the window at the rain – or was that just the other day ? Three successive defeats for the 1’s is far from the sort of form wanted at the business end of a season and a visit from Eynsham , whom had held us to a hard fought draw earlier in the season and were…continue reading →

WAGCC V Garsington 1s 12th August 2023

Right… me again! Flippin ek, someone else needs to start doing something because as I sit in bed (21:28 Friday Night) with my son screaming at me (3rd week straight!) I am not sure I have a huge amount to say… Well, we bowled first on a fairly good track considering the rain we had for the past 2 days, and more showers forecast throughout.Things didn’t get off to a good start with my first over getting thumped for 14 off the first over… I would like to say that there was a…continue reading →

WAGCC 1st XI v Oxford Downs (@Cokethorpe school) Sat 29th July 2023

With rain last week, and the earth feeling decidedly damp, The WAG turned up to CokethorpeSchool to face off against the strongest team (in my opinion) we have played this year. The wind was howling across the ground, and there was a particularly strong fire in the bellies of the WAG bowlers after Spenny won the toss and chose to field first. If I’m honest, I was really only paying attention to my bowling, as running into a headwind really tested my stamina which we all know is pretty poor at the best of…continue reading →
